Compared with Paper registers
Paper is reliable in ways software often is not: it does not need power, a connection, or training. The cost is not in recording, a register records perfectly well, it is in every question that requires reading the register back.
Side by side
| What matters | With MjFour | Paper registers |
|---|---|---|
| Producing a defaulter list | Generated from the current ledger, accurate the day you print it. | Compiled by hand, and out of date before it is handed round. |
| Telling a parent about an absence | Parents are messaged in Urdu or English the same day. | Noticed at the end of the week, if a register is reviewed. |
| Family discounts | Siblings are linked on the record, so the discount applies automatically. | Depends on somebody remembering which children are related. |
| Result cards and certificates | Generated from the record in Urdu or English, with corrections attributable. | Typed by hand each time, and re-typed when a mark changes. |
| Last year’s record | Promotions and campus transfers preserve history rather than overwriting it. | A cupboard, and whoever knows which cupboard. |
| If the office floods | The record survives elsewhere and exports in full at any time. | The record is the paper. |
When Paper registers is the better choice
A very small school with one campus, no bank challan reconciliation and staff who know every family by name will not get much from software, and the transition will cost real time during a term. Paper also keeps working through a power cut, which is why most schools here keep an attendance register even after moving the rest across.
